How to change windows SID

The name or security ID (SID) of the domain specified is inconsistent with the trust information for that domain – How to change windows SID

Issue/Goal:

You have spawned multiple computers/virtual machines/servers (VMs) using the same image without syspreping the image. When you make one of these a domain controller and try to join a second machine created using the same image you receive the following error when trying to log on:

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:

The name or security ID (SID) of the domain specified is inconsistent with the trust information for that domain.

Please try again or consult your system administrator

Alternativly, you simply wish to change the SID of the machine.

Resolution:

Download NewSID and run it on the computer that you want to change the SID on, the following screen will appear:

Select the option which is most appropriate (I used random SID in my case)

If you need to, change the computer name on this screen

Apply the new SID

You’ll then see this screen as the changes are applied. The computer will then reboot (or you will need to reboot it depending if you selected reboot automatically) and you can then enjoy the new SID

Note: The machine needs to be removed from the domain before changing the SID
